Eduvos Bachelor of Science in Information Technology graduate, Elsa Grosso from Angola talks to us about her Eduvos academic journey at our Claremont campus.

Why did you choose to study at Eduvos?
I was offered the opportunity to study in South Africa and just by chance started my studies at Eduvos. Even though I have not been to other institutions, I will still say that Eduvos was the best place to study for me. It might sound biased, but I know others feel the same way I do. I always say the Claremont campus chose me, but it was also the closest campus to where I lived at the time. When I first came to South Africa, I lived in the city and then moved out to the suburbs. It was easy for me to get to and from campus as I always had access to public transport near campus.

What made Eduvos unique to you?
I felt very privileged that I had the opportunity to complete my degree online. I had left South Africa to go back home to Angola during the pandemic. If I hadn’t had the chance to work through my degree online part-time, I would not have completed it when I did. At the time, I didn’t have the financial means to come back to South Africa after the COVID-19 pandemic and Eduvos made it possible for me to continue my studies, for which I am so grateful.

How was your study experience at Eduvos?
It was amazing. I had no problems engaging with staff and students as a foreign student. The environment was so welcoming of different cultures and nationalities, I always felt welcome. My lecturers made my degree pleasant. At first, I struggled, as English isn’t my first language, however, my lecturers did not give up on me. They were always there to keep me motivated.

Would you encourage others to study at Eduvos?
If you’re looking for an institution to study a Higher Certificate, Bachelor or Honours degree in IT or anything IT-related, Eduvos is the best place to study. They have all the resources and content available for students to succeed in the world of work. The campus had everything available to its students. If there was no electricity because of load shedding, the campus was always open to the students.

How has Eduvos contributed to your employment?
Studying part-time allowed me to study while pursuing an internship at Anglobal, where I am now employed full-time as an IT Support Technician. I finished my degree with a good foundation of both practical and theoretical knowledge, which I believe contributed immensely as I was hired while I was still studying. Studying while working wasn’t easy, especially the jumping between classes and work priorities, but the classes were recorded, making things a lot easier for me.

Being a woman in the field of IT
Well, speaking from experience as a woman in IT, I am the only woman in my team of 11. However, I do not find it challenging, I’m not treated any different from anyone else in the team, I am seen as an equal, a team member which is great. Personally, I would never refuse a challenge; I will try my best and ask for help if I need it and I appreciate that my team members are so willing to help. I may be a lot shorter than all of them, but I literally do everything they do, be it going under tables and climbing ladders to fix disconnected cables, to opening and taking apart laptops and printers. I’ve studied hard to be where I am, and even if I’m the only female in the team, I’m meant to be here, I’ve worked hard for it and will never give up.
