Ria Bhugwandeen’s Journey with the Pernod Ricard Bursary.

Post by Eduvos, July 24, 2025.

Meet Ria Azriel Bhugwandeen, a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Software Engineering Stream student at Eduvos Durban (Umhlanga). Guided by a foundation of perseverance and discipline, Ria’s story is one of purpose, passion, and potential fully realised through the support of Eduvos and the Pernod Ricard bursary.

Turning Passion into Progress

From a young age, Ria was drawn to the world of technology, she was curious about how software could bring ideas to life and solve real-world challenges. This natural curiosity grew into a passion for coding, design thinking, and innovation. “Software Engineering gives me the perfect blend of problem-solving and creativity,” she says. “It keeps me learning, building, and growing every day.”

Ria’s drive to succeed is matched by her academic excellence. In her second year, she achieved distinctions in every module, which is an accomplishment made possible, in part, by the Pernod Ricard bursary, which she was awarded for two consecutive years. “The bursary lifted a huge weight off my shoulders,” she explains. “It gave me the freedom to focus on my studies and commit fully to my academic journey without the stress of financial strain.”

She describes managing multiple modules and deadlines as one of her biggest challenges. With careful time management, early mornings, and a deep sense of purpose, Ria pushed through the pressure. “I leaned on my faith for strength and peace and used every moment wisely,” she reflects. Her ability to stay grounded has helped her not only excel academically but also maintain a healthy balance in her personal life.

Shaping a Future of Impact

Outside of her coursework, Ria is passionate about web development and entrepreneurship. She actively takes on side projects that allow her to test her skills and explore new ideas. She’s also a book lover and piano player, activities that help her reflect, relax, and recharge.

Looking ahead, Ria plans to pursue her honours degree at Eduvos, with the goal of becoming a full-stack developer. Her long-term vision is to build digital tools that are impactful and accessible, particularly for small businesses and educational initiatives. “I want to use technology to empower others,” she says, “and also mentor students who may be doubting themselves the way I once did.”

Ria credits Eduvos not only for providing quality education but for creating a space where students are encouraged to dream big, stay curious, and grow confidently. “Eduvos has given me a platform to explore who I am and who I want to become. The support from my lecturers and the community here has been incredible.”

To her sponsor, Ria shares a heartfelt message: “Thank you for believing in me. Your support has changed my life and allowed me to pursue my dreams without fear. I carry that gratitude with me every single day.”

Whether you're looking to start your studies in 2025, starting 29 September, or you're in Matric and ready to pre-enrol for 2026, this is the perfect opportunity to begin planning your future.
