What began as curiosity grew into a purpose driven journey of impact and discovery. Meet Asmaa Akoon, a Bachelor of Science in Biomedicine student at our Tygervalley campus. With a deep desire to understand how the human body functions and a passion for improving lives, her journey reflects growth, resilience, and the confidence that comes from discovering what you are truly capable of.
Asmaa’s decision to pursue Biomedicine was shaped by both curiosity and compassion. She has always been drawn to health sciences, fuelled by her desire to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives.
Choosing where to study was just as important. For Asmaa, Eduvos offered more than just an academic qualification. “Eduvos stood out to me because of its supportive learning environment and its focus on developing both theoretical knowledge and critical thinking skills,” she shares. This balance between knowledge and real-world thinking gave her confidence that she was stepping into an environment where she could truly grow.
Her passion continues to deepen, particularly in areas like anatomy and laboratory work. The opportunity to explore the human body in detail and gain hands-on experience has strengthened her excitement for the field and the impact it can have on people’s lives.
Asmaa’s journey at Eduvos has been one of both academic and personal development, where she has built skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Reflecting on this, she notes that “my faculty is preparing me for the real world by encouraging independent thinking, practical application through lab work, and developing strong analytical and problem-solving skills.”
A key part of her experience has been the support from her lecturers, who create an environment where students feel seen and supported. She highlights the impact of Ms Joy-Mari Buys, explaining that “she has a unique way of teaching that makes even more challenging or less interesting modules, such as ethics, engaging, practical, and enjoyable.” This approach has made learning more accessible and meaningful, and it reflects a broader culture within the faculty. Asmaa adds that “our lecturers build personal connections with students, which I believe makes a significant difference in how we learn and grow.”
One of the most defining moments in her journey was the Bio-entrepreneurship market day. It pushed her beyond her comfort zone and challenged her to think in new ways. “I never expected myself to start a business, so that experience helped me realise that I am capable of much more than I initially thought,” she says.
Through these experiences, Asmaa has developed discipline, resilience, and a more structured way of thinking. These are skills she did not expect to grow so strongly, but they have become essential in shaping her academic journey and future path.
Asmaa’s journey is defined by growth, both in her abilities and in her mindset. She shares, “I hope to contribute positively to the healthcare and scientific field by being part of initiatives that improve people’s health and wellbeing.”
Outside of her studies, Asmaa maintains balance by staying active and connected. Running helps her stay disciplined and clear-minded, while time with family, friends, and involvement in community initiatives keep her motivated and grounded.
Her journey reflects the importance of dedication and consistency, but also the value of stepping beyond what feels familiar. As she shares, Biomedicine is a demanding yet rewarding path, and with the right support and mindset, it opens doors to meaningful impact.
Asmaa Akoon’s story is a reminder that growth often begins where comfort ends. With purpose, support, and a willingness to challenge herself, she continues to build a future rooted in impact and possibility.
