Everything You Need to Know About a PGCE.

If you're considering a career in teaching and already hold an appropriate bachelor's degree or diploma, you've probably come across the term PGCE. Understanding what this qualification involves and how different institutions approach it can help you decide whether it's the right pathway into the teaching profession.

What Is a PGCE?

A Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is a professional teaching qualification designed for graduates who have already completed an appropriate bachelor's degree or diploma and want to become teachers.

Unlike a Bachelor of Education (BEd), which combines subject knowledge and teacher training over four years, a PGCE builds on your existing qualification by developing the educational knowledge, teaching methodologies and practical skills needed to teach confidently and effectively.

How is the Eduvos PGCE Different?

Our PGCE is specifically designed to prepare graduates for the realities of today's classrooms through a flexible learning experience that combines academic theory with practical application.

The Eduvos PGCE is offered through supported online learning, with full-time and part-time study options available. Students can complete the qualification in as little as one year when studying full-time, or over two years when studying part-time. Structured teaching practice gives you the opportunity to apply your learning in real classroom settings before graduating, while dedicated academic support helps you succeed throughout your studies.

The programme prepares graduates to teach in the Senior Phase (Grades 7 to 9) and the Further Education and Training (FET) Phase (Grades 10 to 12). Depending on your undergraduate qualification, you may be able to specialise in subjects including Mathematics, Information Technology, Computer Application Technology (CAT), Business Studies, Geography, History, Life Sciences, and English First Additional Language.

The Eduvos PGCE is accredited by the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC) of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

Who Can Study the Eduvos PGCE?

If you've already completed an appropriate bachelor's degree and would like to pursue a career in teaching, the Eduvos PGCE could be the next step in your academic journey. Admission is based on your existing qualification and the subjects you've previously studied, ensuring you have the academic foundation required for your chosen teaching specialisation.

A PGCE prepares you for teaching opportunities in public and independent schools, subject to the relevant professional registration requirements. It can also open doors to careers in tutoring, curriculum development, educational support and other education-related fields.
