For some, sport is just a pastime, but for others, it becomes a purpose. Meet Igor Lunnermann, an Eduvos student studying a Bachelor of Business Administration through Eduvos Online. He is also a basketball coach whose journey reflects dedication, resilience and a deep commitment to changing the game of basketball in South Africa.
Igor's story begins with a lifelong love for basketball. What started as a personal passion evolved into a calling to uplift others through the sport. His drive and curiosity recently opened an unexpected door when he had the opportunity to be an assistant coach for the summer with the New Orleans Pelicans in the United States. That trip didn't just reaffirm his passion for the sport; it expanded his perspective on what was possible.
Igor's goals are as ambitious as they are selfless. He dreams of giving children across South Africa access to proper training, resources and opportunities, regardless of their background. "You always want to dream as big as you can," he says. "My goal is to change basketball in South Africa, to give children the right tools and an equal opportunity."
This vision is at the heart of his work with the African Basketball Academy (ABA), where he helps young athletes develop their skills and pursue opportunities abroad. As the Basketball Africa League (BAL) continues to grow, Igor believes this is the perfect time to nurture young talent and build the sport from the roots up.
While basketball is his passion, education has played a crucial role in shaping Igor's journey. Balancing his studies with managing a growing academy has not always been easy, but he believes that Eduvos has provided the ideal environment for growth.
He describes Eduvos as a place that has given him the support, structure and knowledge to manage both his academic and professional pursuits. "On the business side, I think Eduvos is a really good spot to be in," he says. "I don't think I could be in a better situation. The support here is incredible, and I wouldn't change it."
For Igor, Eduvos has been more than just a higher education institution; it's been a community that encourages ambition while helping students develop the practical skills they need to succeed in their chosen fields.
Igor knows firsthand what it takes to juggle multiple responsibilities. His advice to future Vossies, especially those trying to balance work, study and passion projects, is to stay open to the journey and trust the process. He believes success comes from perseverance and consistency, even when things get tough.
"You're going to have highs and lows but stick with it. Trust your lecturers, trust the admin, trust your support system," he says. Above all, he stresses the importance of commitment. "Discipline over anything. Do your work, stay consistent, and that's what gets you there."
From studying business to leading young athletes on the court, Igor Lunnermann's journey is a testament to the power of discipline, community and purpose. His story reminds us that with passion and persistence, every dream, no matter how ambitious, can start to take shape.
