Eduvos Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (Software Engineering) graduate, Jared talks to us about his Eduvos journey at our Tyger Valley campus.

Why did you choose to study IT at Eduvos?
After high school, I initially studied a higher certificate in fitness at another institution, but I realised I should consider pursuing an IT qualification as I really enjoyed it as a subject in high school. I chose a Higher Certificate in Information Systems (Engineering) MLM, which allowed me to study at my own pace. I then started an internship which helped me choose between software and network engineering. After the internship, I realised I really enjoyed the Software aspects of Engineering and started my BSc IT (Software Engineering) degree. My overall experience at Eduvos was really good.

How did you find the transition from your Higher Certificate to a Degree?
I think the higher certificate helped me a lot, it gave me a bit of an advantage and a great insight into the field. I managed to learn a programming language, Java. It was then easier to understand more languages and I was able to get credits for my BSc degree, where I then focused on Python as my programming language. Studying an MLM (Mastery Learning Methodology) qualification allowed me to manage my own time. At the start of my higher certificate, it was quite tough. I’d sadly lost my mother, the staff and lecturers were very understanding and supportive, allowing me to catch up on work missed. I really appreciated how they accommodated me at that time.

Why did you choose to study mid-year?
After my 3-month internship, I chose to study further and started in Eduvos’s mid-year intake, which I really enjoyed. I attended in-person classes where I really got to enjoy the student and campus life before the pandemic hit. All classes were online, for most of my first year, then towards the end of my second year, we could come back to class which I really enjoyed. The class sizes were small and a lot more personal with one-on-one interactions.

What makes Eduvos unique?
As a private institution, I liked that smaller classes allowed for a more personal study experience. It’s a lot easier to get assistance from lecturers and other staff members instead of larger classes where you’re just a number. I also felt that in bigger classes it might be easier to lose focus in class and fall behind. I really enjoyed that the staff supported my needs. Which also allowed me to take part in the Mentor/Mentee programme. I was a mentor and had one-on-one sessions with my mentee.  I was introduced to the programme by Corne Van Graan, the Academic and Student Experience Manager at the Tyger Valley campus. There was a student she felt would be a good fit for both of our personalities. We were both studying IT, so I helped guide him in his first six months, adjusting to life on campus.

Do you want to study further and are you employed?
I haven’t fully explored all my options in terms of studying further but I am considering it. I would love to further my studies abroad, to be close to some of my friends who have become more like family. Right now, I’m employed at an IT company, Traderoot, that I found through Eduvos’s Employability Centre. I received an email from the centre, applied and got the job.

Do you have any advice for students looking to study?
I would suggest that students should surround themselves with supportive people, friends and family. I was lucky enough to have an amazing support system that helped me throughout my whole study experience, to whom I’d like to give special thanks to Angela, Tracey, Ian, Riley, James, and Emma. I think as a personal experience for myself at Eduvos, I was really impressed with how Eduvos handled my personal situation. After losing my mother and best friend, the lecturers and support staff really helped me out. In addition to many staff members at Eduvos, I’d like to highlight one of my lecturers Trudie Lotz and Corne van Graan, who really helped me throughout my studies, personally and by giving me great work advice.
