Every journey into the working world begins with a single decision to learn, grow, and apply. Meet Nevin Tom, a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Software Engineering stream graduate, and now a data engineer based in Johannesburg. His story is one of intention and steady progress, shaped by a desire to move beyond theory and into real world impact.

Foundations and Purpose

Nevin's path into tech was guided by a clear vision of the kind of education he wanted. He was not looking for a passive experience, but one that would prepare him for real industry demands. "I didn't want to just study concepts in isolation. I wanted to understand the fundamentals and also know how to apply them," Nevin explains.

Pathways That Move You Forward

This thinking led him to Eduvos, where the balance between theory and practical learning stood out. It gave him the opportunity to build both knowledge and confidence in his abilities. "By the time I graduated in 2025, I felt genuinely prepared to step into a technical role without having to relearn everything on the job," Nevin says. Today, that foundation supports his work as a data engineer, where he builds data pipelines, automates processes, and transforms raw data into valuable insights for businesses.

The Eduvos Experience

During his time at Eduvos, Nevin developed both the technical expertise and the mindset required to succeed in an ever-evolving field. His interest in data engineering grew from understanding its impact across industries.

"Every smart business decision, every product recommendation, every insight a company acts on starts with data that someone built a pipeline for," Nevin shares. "There is something satisfying about knowing that the work you do quietly in the background has a real impact."

His qualification, he shares, did not just teach him how to write code, it taught him how to think through problems properly.

One of the most defining moments of his journey was his final year project, where he was challenged to build a full stack mobile application that solved a real business problem. "We had to build a full stack application covering mobile development, cloud integration, APIs, backend logic, the whole thing," Nevin says. "It pushed me into areas I had not worked in before and forced me to figure things out under real pressure."

What stood out most during this experience was the level of support he received from his lecturer. "At Eduvos my lecturer actually knew who I was, understood my strengths, and gave feedback that was specific to me," Nevin reflects. "Not generic comments but honest, targeted input on where I was doing well and where I needed to improve." Through this journey, he developed a strong problem-solving mindset, along with the ability to communicate ideas clearly, manage pressure, and apply feedback effectively.

Paying It Forward Through Code in Place

One of the most meaningful milestones in Nevin's journey came after graduation, when he was selected as a Section Leader for Code in Place 2026. Code in Place is an online course from Standford University that teaches the fundamentals of computer programming using the widely used Python programming language. Having previously been part of the programme, the opportunity marked a full circle moment.

"I had been a Code in Place student back in 2023 and the programme had a genuine impact on me," Nevin says. "It helped me solidify my Python foundations and gave me a lot of confidence early on." Motivated by that experience, he made a conscious decision to give back. "After going through it I knew I wanted to give back in some way," Nevin explains. "I was checking in regularly, waiting for applications to open. The moment they did, I applied." Being selected on a global scale made the achievement even more significant.

"Out of thousands of people who apply from around the world, only around 2000 are selected to teach," Nevin shares. "Being one of them, chosen to pass on what was shared with me, meant a lot." For Nevin, the role is about more than teaching. It is an opportunity to grow and connect with others in meaningful ways.

Building Impact Through Data

As a data engineer, Nevin focuses on building systems that are reliable, scalable, and meaningful. His work may happen behind the scenes, but it plays a vital role in driving decisions and creating value.

Looking ahead, his vision is centred on both innovation and impact. "I want to make data more accessible," Nevin says. "In South Africa the data and tech industry are growing quickly but there is still a real gap between where the industry is heading and the number of skilled people coming through. I want to be part of bridging that." Through his work and his commitment to mentorship, he is contributing to a future where more people feel confident entering the tech space. Reflecting on his journey, his advice is grounded in his experience. "If you are serious about building a career in IT or software engineering, Eduvos is a strong place to start," Nevin concludes.

Nevin's story is a powerful reminder that when education meets intention, it creates the foundation for lasting impact.
