If you enjoy problem-solving, understanding how businesses work, and making decisions that influence organisations, a career as a Chartered Accountant may offer more possibilities than you realise.
Many Chartered Accountants build careers that extend beyond traditional accounting roles. Some move into finance leadership positions, while others work in consulting, entrepreneurship, investment environments, strategy, and specialised financial fields. The qualification can open opportunities across a range of industries and career pathways.
If becoming a CA(SA) is part of your future goals, understanding where to begin can help make the path ahead feel more manageable.
Starting your journey towards a career in accounting begins with understanding your current position and choosing a pathway that supports your goals.
Eduvos offers different entry routes into the Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting qualification, helping you build the academic foundation required for further progression towards the CA(SA) pathway. Subject to meeting the relevant progression requirements, you may continue to the Bridging Programme in Advanced Accounting and subsequently the SAICA-accredited Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting.
Once you have established your academic foundation, the next stage is understanding how the pathway towards becoming a CA(SA) develops over time.
Step 1: Complete your Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting
The first stage begins with completing a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting qualification,
where you build a strong understanding of accounting principles and broader business knowledge.
During your studies, you develop knowledge and skills across areas such as financial accounting,
taxation, auditing, management accounting, and financial management. This helps create a strong
academic foundation for future progression into the CA(SA) route.
Step 2: Progress to a Bridging Programme in Advanced Accounting
After completing the undergraduate qualification and meeting progression requirements, students
pursuing the CA(SA) route will need to complete the Bridging Programme in Advanced Accounting,
designed to prepare them for more advanced accounting studies. This stage builds on undergraduate
knowledge and prepares students for postgraduate-level learning.
Step 3: Complete your SAICA-accredited Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting
You will then progress to our SAICA-accredited Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting,
where learning becomes increasingly integrated and advanced. At this stage, you will
learn to apply knowledge across multiple accounting disciplines while strengthening
analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and professional understanding.
Step 4: Complete Your SAICA Training Contract
Alongside your professional development, you will need to complete a SAICA-accredited training contract,
often referred to as articles. This practical training period allows you to apply your academic knowledge
in a real-world business environment while developing the professional skills required of a Chartered
Accountant.
During your training contract, you will gain practical experience across a range of areas, including accounting, auditing, taxation, financial management, and professional ethics. This stage plays a critical role in preparing you for the responsibilities and expectations of the profession.
Step 5: Write the SAICA Qualifying Examinations
After successfully completing the required academic components, you can progress to the SAICA qualifying examinations:
These examinations assess both technical knowledge and the ability to apply learning in practical and professional contexts.
Becoming a Chartered Accountant is a process that develops over time. Every stage creates an opportunity to build knowledge, strengthen professional skills, and move closer to your long-term goals. If becoming a Chartered Accountant is part of your future plans, understanding your starting point is the first step towards building the future you want.
