"I still believe that if your aim is to change the world, journalism is a more immediate short-term weapon." - Tom Stoppard

The Eduvos Nelson Mandela Bay campus hosted a Media Studies event on 17 May 2023. Part celebration, part information session, the event boasted guest speakers from local media organisations to inform and inspire all in attendance.

Kicking things off was Devon Koen, a reporter for The Herald and The Weekend Post. He is an experienced reporter with a demonstrated history of working in the print industry and television broadcast and is skilled in non-linear editing, news writing, film, documentaries and breaking news. Devon spoke about the importance of journalists in contemporary South Africa, and how news media continues to adapt to societal changes.

We also heard from Lesley Geyer, the marketing manager at Algoa FM. Lesley is an experienced marketing and communications professional with many years of experience covering sponsorship, trade, business arrangements and relationships with businesses, individuals, and organisations in the corporate sector, with a strong focus on strategic and customer relationship management. Lesley discussed the benefits of studying Media Studies, and the exciting directions and endless opportunities that a career in the industry can take you.

Some of the questions from those in attendance related to the merging of traditional and digital media, the speed of news and the verification of sources, the balance between ethics, sponsorship, and keeping public figures and organisations accountable, and the importance of staying relevant to your market. Both guests stressed the importance of research, critical thinking, and practical experience in preparing for a career in the field.

Our Bachelor of Arts (Media Studies) ensures that graduates are future-ready through compulsory core modules that look at theories on the media and its role in society, applied ethics, media law, digital journalism, and critical reasoning. Research is heavily embedded in the qualification, as is practical work experience in the industry, to merge theory and practice. Students also have the freedom to tailor their education to their future goals and dreams by choosing electives including Journalism Writing, Broadcast Journalism, Public Relations, Political Science, English Literature, Linguistics, and Communication Science.
