Eduvos Leads the Conversation: Fighting Misinformation in the Age of Social Media

Post by Eduvos, August 22, 2025.

At Eduvos we don’t just talk about preparing students for the real world, we bring the real world into our classrooms and events. Our recent Academic Symposium at Eduvos Potchefstroom titled Misinformation and Social Media – An Ethical Crisis proved exactly that.

It was not just another academic gathering. It was a buzzing hub of ideas, bold questions and collaborative problem solving where students, academics and industry experts came together to tackle one of today’s biggest challenges: the ethics of misinformation in the digital age.

A Stage for Brave Conversations

From the very first session it was clear that this was not about quietly agreeing with the status quo. The symposium created a space to challenge old ways of thinking, explore human behaviour in the context of technology and imagine innovative, ethically sound solutions to real world problems.

The energy in the room was incredible as discussions flowed between students, academic staff and industry leaders. The event proved that when we combine knowledge, passion and creativity, big change is possible.

A huge shoutout goes to the Eduvos Potchefstroom Programme Conveners who made this event happen: Mr Stewart Coetzee, Mr Ngoni Makuvaza, Mr Collins Motai and Mr Mark Langa. Their dedication and vision turned an idea into an unforgettable day of learning and connection.

Thank you to Gillian Strydom whose excellent facilitation kept discussions engaging, focused and insightful.

Our keynote speaker, Dr Brenda Van Wyk from the University of Pretoria, delivered a compelling talk using real world case studies to highlight the far-reaching ethical implications of misinformation. Her address reminded us that misinformation is not just an online issue but a force that can shape our political and social landscapes.

A Panel That Made Us Think

One of the biggest highlights of the day was the panel discussion featuring:

  • Dr Chilombo Mbenga Banda from NWU Mahikeng Campus
  • Dr Maricel Botha from NWU Potchefstroom Campus
  • Dr Tinaye Chivizhe from Eduvos
  • Mr Ivan Langa from Eduvos

Their insights challenged everyone in the room to think critically about their own role in the fight against misinformation and ethical decline.

This symposium was not simply a day on the academic calendar. It was a movement that inspired reflection, sparked action and reminded us of the incredible things we can achieve when we work together.

To our amazing academic staff, support teams and of course our students, thank you. Your energy, hard work and commitment made this a success and once again showed why Eduvos is a place where ideas grow, and futures are built.
