The G20 Tourism Hackathon champions a future where technology serves people first. By uniting government, business, and academia, this legacy initiative harnesses Artificial Intelligence and sustainable innovation to reimagine tourism. Set against the serene backdrop of the Sabie River valley in Mpumalanga, the Hackathon brought together 48 students from 21 higher education institutions across South Africa. Their mission was ambitious yet vital, to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to reimagine tourism, promote inclusivity, and support sustainable growth.

The Inaugural G20 Tourism Hackathon challenged students to design solutions that enhance travel experiences, support rural communities, and preserve cultural heritage. With themes ranging from smart tourism to heritage innovation, the Hackathon was more than a competition; it was a platform for future leaders to connect, create, and lead.

Ubuntu Unlimited: A Team with Vision

Among the standout teams was the Ubuntu Unlimited team that comprised of Hishaam Langson; Thelma Makoma Rasekele; Skhanyiso Dlamini; Ross Moors; Mathapelo Ngubeni; Keotshepile Modise and Vusi Matlou, which proudly included Eduvos students alongside peers from other higher education institutions. Their solution blended Virtual Reality (VR), AI, and Web3 to create a digital tourism platform that connects global audiences with South Africa’s rural cultures.

Through immersive workshops, virtual village explorations, and the ability to purchase authentic crafts online, the team showcased how technology can open doors for local communities while preparing international tourists for meaningful in-person experiences.

Third Place on a Global Stage

Team Ubuntu Unlimited secured third place, winning R105 000 in prize money, but the recognition extended far beyond awards. Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille commended all participants, highlighting that these solutions will be accelerated into tangible, ethical, and sustainable innovations showcased on the global stage.

For Eduvos, this moment is more than a win. It reflects our commitment to preparing students not just for today’s challenges, but for tomorrow’s opportunities.
