Prelim exams are here, and for many Grade 12 learners, this is the first real experience of what the final matric exams will feel like. Prelims are not just about marks; they’re about building resilience, testing your preparation, and learning how to manage pressure in a healthy way.
South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) has shared some simple, practical tips to help you stay balanced and confident during this busy time.
Keep your bed for sleeping, not studying. If you work in bed, your brain starts linking that space with stress instead of rest. Set up a desk or quiet corner for revision so that your bed remains a place to relax and recharge, something your brain and body will thank you for.
Stop studying at least an hour before bedtime. Use that time to relax, read something light, or listen to calming music. This gives your brain space to process what you’ve learned and helps improve your ability to remember it the next day.
Aim for at least seven hours of sleep each night. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Consistency helps your mind and body feel rested, focused, and ready to take on your exams.
If you start to feel overwhelmed, reach out for help. Talk to a teacher, family member, or friend. Whether you’re feeling anxious, stuck, or just need someone to talk to, SADAG also offers a free support through their 24-hour toll-free helpline at 0800 008 206 and a WhatsApp chatline at 087 163 2050 (available 8 am to 5 pm).
Prelims are your chance to practise under pressure, believe in your preparation, and strengthen the habits that will carry you into finals and beyond. Remember, Eduvos and SADAG are rooting for you every step of the way.
