Derosha Moodley, the talented Literature Lecturer at our Eduvos Durban (Umhlanga) Campus reflects on their recent Humanities event in this faculty feature.

On Friday 11th of August 2023, I had the pleasure of presenting first-year Durban (Umhlanga) Vossies on stage at the Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World‘s Globe Theatre for the Durban International Book Fair (DIBF) 2023.

The fair was a creative extravaganza where writers, artists, academics and a variety of industries met under one roof to showcase their creative outputs and engage in important dialogue on works of literature that have an impact on our lives. The importance of attending this event for our students was vital.  Keeping up to date with trending social topics is important to the Humanities faculty and networking with writers and publishers meant exposure to industry for our students.

I was very proud of our first-year Vossies who attended, they were so excited to speak about their time at Eduvos with learners from Grades 11 and 12.  To watch our students so confidently speak about their higher education experiences in a compassionate manner to prospective Vossies revealed the humanness value that we espouse at Eduvos. Not only did our Vossies delight high schoolers with their wits but the audience whilst on stage!

Keholin Naidoo, Snqobile Kgobokgobo, Keiana Murthi, Reabetswe Potsane and Jaydene Naidoo shared their current leisure reads with the audience and each one of them also explained the importance of reading for their prospective professions. Reabetswe’s take on the importance of reading for legal professionals was presented with an energetic spirit, Jaydene’s speech on the importance of reading for building the empathic mind of a psychologist was met with intrigue. Keiana’s piece on why reading is important for the corporate space as a Higher Certificate in Business Management student exposed how learning emotional intelligence from exposure to characters under testing circumstances is a vital perspective-building skill for the boardroom. Snqobile’s speech on the importance of reading for future HR and industrial psychology professionals displayed the cognitive development that happens during reading. Last, but not least, Keholin Naidoo concluded the Vossie presentation by showing off the dual value of our Psychology and English degree where Psychology teaches the reasons behind human behaviour, and English literature studies teach the expression of human behaviour- a wonderful pairing if I may say so myself! Each student represented their qualifications with confidence and learnt a new skill...speaking in front of a public audience.

Accompanying the on-stage team was our super Customer Relationship Marketers (CRM) Kiasha Munthree and Viwa Gebuza who spent time explaining to the Grade 11s and 12s our qualification offerings at our exhibit.  Vossies Revone Manicum, Subhadra Singh, Amukelani Mtetwa, Trinity Godfrey and Lungelo Malambule also attended and supported their peers on stage whilst taking in the sights and sounds of the DIBF 2023.

I would like to thank Arno Meyer and the Durban (Umhlanga) campus for being committed to building a reading culture for our student body. From the inception of our designated reading room to the inspiring quotes all over campus, to supporting our students on stage at the Durban International Book Fair, there is no end to the literary opportunities in and outside the syllabus at Eduvos Umhlanga campus.

A special thank you goes to Anivesh Singh of Micromega Publications for giving us a place at the DIBF 2023.
