Our Midrand campus recently hosted a forum on gender-based violence (GBV), organised by Eduvos BioCom, a subdivision of the SRC that focuses on the Applied Science faculty. Industry, representatives of government and NGOs came together to address this pressing issue.

The event kicked off with the Eduvos Choir who led with the national anthem. Thereafter, Eduvos CEO Siegie Brownlee welcomed all the students and stakeholders. She expanded on the dire consequences of GBV and expressed Eduvos’ zero-tolerance policy on the matter.

Road Safety Director Thandi Moya-Parkinson from the National Department of Transport shared how GBV affects every sector, and that the Department greatly appreciates every contribution made to address it. “As the Department of Transport, we have found a friend in Eduvos”.

This was followed by a panel discussion featuring various speakers who represented their organisations and answered questions from the audience. The panellists included professionals from the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA), Breaking Cycles NGO, the Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) as well as the Eduvos Psychology Programme convenor.

The event was concluded by Applied Science Faculty Assistant, Oscar Murombo who shared his gratitude with all in attendance and emphasised the importance of student participation in forums like this. “Naturally, scientists are deemed to be people who do not care much about engaging with society. We are teaching our students to be socially responsible and participate in society. We can’t be too quiet on something that is a pandemic in the country.”
