The path into higher education is not always a straight line. While some may move directly from school into a qualification, others spend years building careers, gaining experience, and developing valuable skills before considering further study.
Over time, it can become easy to assume that higher education is no longer an option, particularly if your journey has not followed the traditional route. Perhaps your matric results did not meet the requirements for your preferred qualification, you entered the workplace instead of continuing your studies, or life simply took you in a different direction.
What many prospective students do not realise is that there is more than one way to access higher education. We offer multiple pathways that recognises previous learning, workplace experience, and alternative routes to academic success. Through options such as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Credit Accumulation and Transfer (CAT), Foundation Programmes, and Access Programmes, students may be able to access higher education in ways they had not previously considered.
Before deciding that further study is not possible, it may be worth taking another look at what is possible.
Some of the most valuable learning happens while you are working. Professional experience often develops qualities that are highly relevant to further study, including resilience, leadership, communication, problem-solving, decision-making, and practical expertise. While these skills may not always appear on a formal transcript, they represent meaningful learning gained through years of navigating workplace challenges and responsibilities.
This is one of the reasons Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) exists. RPL allows previous workplace experience to be assessed against specific academic requirements, helping to recognise the knowledge and skills individuals have already developed.
Eduvos supports this process through our dedicated Recognition of Prior Learning Certification Centre, helping prospective students explore how their previous learning and experience may support access to further study. For some students, mature age admission pathways may also provide opportunities to return to education later in life, recognising that readiness to study is not always determined solely by results achieved many years ago.
Higher education no longer follows a single entry route, and different pathways may be available depending on your circumstances.
For some students, the barrier may be a specific matric subject result. You may meet the general admission requirements for higher education but fall short of the subject requirements needed for your preferred qualification. In these situations, our Access Programmes can provide an alternative pathway into degree study by helping students bridge academic gaps and meet the requirements for further study. Pre-degree Foundation Programmes are designed to help students build the academic skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to progress into degree studies.
If you have studied before, you may not need to start from the beginning either. Previously completed studies may be considered through Credit Accumulation and Transfer (CAT), which allows relevant credits to be recognised towards a new qualification, subject to institutional requirements.
The right pathway will depend on your individual circumstances, but understanding the options available can often reveal opportunities that may not have seemed possible at first glance.
If you have been telling yourself that you do not qualify, it may be worth exploring your options before making that decision. Sometimes the most important step is not submitting an application immediately, but taking the time to understand what opportunities may already be available to you. You may be closer to studying than you think.
Applications for our next intake are open. Enrol today and start on 20 July.
