On Thursday, 30 October, young innovators from across South Africa gathered at our Pretoria Campus for the official Eduvos BioVerse Competition pitch event, hosted by the Faculty of Applied Science. This event celebrated the creativity and scientific brilliance of students using biotechnology and biomedicine to build a healthier, more sustainable future.

Honouring the Visionaries Behind the Breakthroughs

The 2025 BioVerse Competition invited third year and honours-level students from both private and public higher education institutions to design projects that combined scientific innovation with practical, real-world application. The results were nothing short of extraordinary.

  1. 1st Place: Nico Jeandre Fenner (University of Pretoria)
Project: A comprehensive diagnostic and characterisation tool designed to assist clinicians in accurately diagnosing cancer and supporting targeted therapies.
Award: A six-month internship at Aquatico and R15,000 in publication funding from the Eduvos Research Unit.
  2. 2nd Place: Matome Talakgale (Eduvos)
Project: An AI-powered bioinformatics platform integrating genomic, phenotypic, and literature data to accelerate the diagnosis of rare genetic diseases.
Award: Two full open-access publications valued at R15,000 each.
  3. 3rd Place: Maneo Mthethwa (Eduvos)
Project: A chitosan–gold nanoparticle hydrogel wound dressing for the post-operative management and assessment of Marjolin ulcers, integrated with PET imaging to monitor cancer cell eradication.
Award: R5,000, sponsored by Inqaba Biotech.

A Platform for Purpose-Driven Research

Through BioVerse, students experience how research can move beyond the laboratory to create tangible impact. With mentorship from leading academics, exposure to industry experts, and opportunities to publish and present their work, participants gain insight into how science becomes transformative when driven by purpose.

The competition also reflects Eduvos’ broader commitment to nurturing a research culture that empowers students to turn ideas into action. By creating opportunities to connect theory with practice, Eduvos helps emerging scientists apply their learning in ways that address real-world challenges.

As part of their achievement, the top three finalists will present their projects at the upcoming Eduvos Research Indaba (12–14 November 2025) at the Bedfordview Campus, and online. There, they will join scholars, researchers, and industry professionals to explore how innovation and technology can advance Africa’s sustainable development goals.

Shaping Africa’s Future, One Idea at a Time

The BioVerse Competition stands as a testament to Eduvos’ belief that innovation begins in the lecture room but must live beyond it. By empowering students to engage in research that matters, we are nurturing the next generation of scientists, innovators, and changemakers who are shaping Africa’s future through science and technology.

Eduvos extends heartfelt thanks to Aquatico, Inqaba Biotech, 20Twenty Science and iStore for their generous support in championing young scientific talent. Their partnership reinforces the importance of collaboration between academia and industry in driving Africa’s innovation ecosystem forward.
