Meet Donald Buchan, an Eduvos alum who turned uncertainty into opportunity. What began as a change in academic direction became the foundation for a career in human resources and entrepreneurship.
Donald began his studies at a large public university, pursuing a law degree. By his second year, he realised that the legal field was not where his passion lay. After reflecting on his goals and interests, and with encouragement from his family, he decided to explore new opportunities that would allow him to work more closely with people.
Both his father and grandfather worked in human resources, which inspired him to consider a Bachelor of Commerce qualification. After researching the options available, he found that the degree offered a strong foundation across business disciplines and the flexibility to specialise later.
By then, most higher education institutions had closed their applications. A family friend recommended Eduvos. Donald and his mother visited the Tygervalley campus, met with a student advisor and enrolled for the following year.
“That visit to the Tygervalley campus changed everything. I started my Bachelor of Commerce degree and loved every second of it. It gave me exactly what I needed – a broad understanding of business and the freedom to find my true path.”
Donald describes his time at Eduvos as transformative. Having experienced both a large public university and a smaller private institution, he found Eduvos to be a space that prioritised support, community and individual attention.
“At my previous university, we were about 400 students in a class. At Eduvos, we were around 40 or 50. That made a huge difference. You get to know your lecturers, they know you by name, and you have the space to ask questions and grow.”
Donald often reflects on how much he valued the accessibility of his lecturers, the practical learning approach and the sense of belonging that came with being part of a close-knit academic community. For him, those experiences were key to building his confidence and developing his professional identity.
After completing his Bachelor of Commerce, Donald began his career in human resources, gaining valuable experience across various industries. His strong people skills and understanding of business operations set the foundation for his next step – starting his own HR company.
Today, Donald runs a successful recruitment company dedicated to helping businesses grow and connecting them with the right talent.
“My Eduvos experience gave me the foundation to build my business. It taught me how to think critically, communicate effectively and approach challenges with a problem-solving mindset. Those are skills I use every day.”
Donald credits Eduvos for preparing him beyond academics. The smaller classes, engaged lecturers, and supportive environment encouraged him to take initiative and think like an entrepreneur.
“The structure and support system at Eduvos gave me the confidence to pursue my goals. It showed me that success starts with believing in yourself and surrounding yourself with people who want to see you succeed.”
When asked what advice he would give to current learners or parents exploring higher education options, Donald encourages them to prioritise an environment that fosters growth and belonging.
“Do not be afraid to change direction. It is okay not to have everything figured out right away. What matters is finding a space that helps you discover your strengths and supports your journey. Eduvos does that exceptionally well.”
