For many students, the path to their dream career is a winding one, filled with moments of uncertainty and self-discovery. Meet Olivia Olivier, a third-year Bachelor of Commerce in Tourism Management student at Eduvos, whose journey has been one of passion, exploration, and a deep appreciation for the travel industry.
Born and raised in Limpopo, Olivia's early years were shaped by a love for culture, history, and adventure. In 2018, her family relocated to Mossel Bay, a move she describes as one of the best decisions her parents ever made.
“Throughout high school, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. Everyone else seemed to have a set path, but I found myself constantly switching between options,” Olivia recalls. “However, in Grade 9, I chose Tourism as one of my subjects, and that was it for me. I fell in love with the industry. My dad, who loves road trips, would always tell me to ‘look outside the window,’ and I think that’s where my passion started.”
Olivia had always been passionate about tourism, but choosing the right institution wasn’t easy, until Eduvos visited her high school for a career day and everything clicked.
“I had been praying for guidance on my future, and then Eduvos arrived to talk about their programmes – specifically in our Tourism class. It felt like a sign,” Olivia says. “When I attended the Open Day, the friendliness of the staff and the personalised experience really stood out. From day one, I felt welcomed, supported, and truly seen.”
Three years into her studies, Olivia has no regrets. The experience has exceeded her expectations, both academically and personally.
“The lecturers at Eduvos are incredible. They genuinely care about us and try to form real connections. They remember our names, engage with us in class, and are always willing to help. Some of them even work in the industry, so their insights are invaluable,” Olivia shares. “It’s also amazing to be part of an institution where students are recognised and appreciated. I never imagined being featured in a blog like this, but it just shows how Eduvos values its students.”
As she approaches the end of her degree, Olivia remains excited about her future. With interests in both hospitality and eco-tourism, she is exploring different paths within the industry.
“My love for tourism has only grown. There’s so much more to it than just flights and hotels – it’s about people, experiences, and the way travel connects the world,” she says. “One of the most eye-opening experiences for me was attending a tourism event at Robben Island last year. Meeting professionals who are passionate about the industry reassured me that I’m on the right path.”
For students still trying to find their way, Olivia offers this advice: “Don’t stress too much if you’re unsure about your future. It’s okay to take time to figure it out. But when you do find something you’re passionate about, embrace it fully. Surround yourself with people who support you, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Eduvos has been that kind of place for me.”
With her enthusiasm and dedication, there’s no doubt that Olivia will make a meaningful impact in the tourism industry. We can’t wait to see where her journey takes her next.
