Eduvos Law students get a taste of the legal world.

After months of rigorous preparation, four groups of Law students arrived at the Midrand campus for the first-ever Eduvos Regional Moot Court. Hosted at Eduvos Midrand, the Moot Court attendees included BCom Law students from Eduvos Bedfordview and Pretoria.

“The Moot Court experience pushes one to perform beyond one's comfort zone. You're bound to learn something meaningful and impactful which will change the course of your career!” Siphesihle Mkhonza, Eduvos BCom Law student.

The Moot Court was a two-day affair in which students argued fictional cases in front of a panel of esteemed judges.

Institutions of higher learning have used the Moot Court model for centuries because it prepares law students for real court proceedings. Working together in teams and guided by the judges, the Moot court environment enhances oral presentation skills, challenges critical thinking and sharpens research skills.

“...it has helped me work on my research skills, my confidence when I present my case and I can say I am more interested in pursuing law than I was before.” Lorato Modingoana, Eduvos BCom Law student.

The following esteemed law professionals, with decades of experience amongst them, formed the judging panel:

Judges

Kevin Malunga, Advocate and Former Deputy Public Prosecutor
• Lindiwe Matsebula, Co-Director and Founder of Mataa Matsebula Attorneys
• Dr Tinaye Chivizhe, Head of Programme for Law at Eduvos
• Inonge Mataa, Attorney, Co-founder and Managing Director of Mataa Matsebula Attorneys
• Andrew Goldberg, Attorney, CEO and Founder of Goldberg Attorneys Inc
• Clinton Rademeyer, Attorney and Head of Legal at Eduvos

The teams argued two matters:

(1) the junior teams (1st students) served as the Applicants and Respondents on the matter of whether or not women should face criminal charges for causing foetal alcohol syndrome; and (2) our senior students (2nd and 3rd years) dealt with a Motion case in which they served as the Plaintiffs / Defendants on an application for the change of guardianship, care, contact and “custody” of the minor children.

The matter was between the Grandparents of the child and her parents whom the grandparents felt could better provide for the minor child.

After much deliberation, the Midrand team took top honours in the competition. A special thank you to our judges who selflessly imparted instruction, wisdom and guidance to our promising, young legal eagles.

Best speaker winner Keenan Swart said, “It is a great honour to hold the title of Overall Moot Court winners of 2022 and to have the Best Speaker Award in the overall Senior category of the competition. It was a privilege to have dedicated lectures and a wonderful team by my side.”
