Eduvos Durban Celebrates Indian African Book Launch.

Post by Eduvos, December 09, 2022.

Our Eduvos Durban campus recently hosted the Durban Book Fair Team as they launched a book entitled Indian African written by Kiru Naidoo, Selvan Naidoo and Ranjith Choonilall.

The evening was a charming one. The book shares knowledge on the many oppressive experiences that Indian indentured labourers endured upon their arrival into the country. The book documented the harsh working conditions under the rule of the colonising government and also provided a peek into the modest indulgences of the Indian settlers.  Stories were shared, knowledge transferred and surprising commonalities amongst the racial and cultural groups were highlighted.

This collaborative effort by the Eduvos Durban campus, the 1860’s Heritage Centre and the Durban Book Fair resulted in a well spent Monday evening that was filled with introductions, networking and books!

A great treat for us was hosting Somolon Bakare and Michael Dorfling from the Eduvos Humanities Faculty and Ashwin Singh, international playwright and South African artist, who chaired the book fair discussion session. Their collective presence made the event all the more exciting and we could feel the Edu-vibe growing as the twinkling night sky set on us all.

Eduvos Durban’s General Manager Arno Meyer and Academic Manager Olika Saikoolal ensured that the invited guests, Humanities faculty members and Anivesh Singh’s Durban Book Fair team had all the requirements needed for the first of many Durban Book Fair activities that will be held on our Durban campus.

The Eduvos Durban campus are very excited about this collaboration. Not only does our collaboration with the Durban Book Fair team open our Eduovs Humanities students to publishing knowledge and the wider creative industry, but allows us as an organisation to contribute to a reading culture that is on a great decline nationally.

Reading should never be forced: it is a gift of knowledge, a gift of travel, a gift of company especially for those who cannot go to school, board a plane or seek comfort in the arms of a loved one.
