Bursary Feature: Shaping Stories and Futures

Post by Eduvos, November 18, 2025.

Meet Bonolo Masukume, a third-year student studying a Bachelor of Arts with a Media Studies stream at our Eduvos Midrand campus. Media studies was never just a career choice for Bonolo; it was a natural extension of her voice, her curiosity, and her desire to make an impact. United Stations is helping make her dreams a reality. She is someone who deeply understands the power of storytelling: “I’m someone who believes in the power of a narrative, not just telling stories, but shaping how people understand the world around them,” she explains.

Growing up, Bonolo was enrolled in a modelling academy by her mother, who hoped it would boost her confidence. It did more than that. The experience revealed Bonolo’s natural ability to speak publicly and connect with people. “People were shocked when they heard me speak in front of a crowd. Even I was surprised. That was the moment I realised I could do more with my voice,” she says.

Bonolo knew she wanted to tell stories that mattered, have meaningful conversations, and make space for underrepresented voices.

“People often assume that if you're confident, you should go into acting or something dramatic, but I wanted something more grounded that still allowed me to express myself. Media studies gave me that balance,” she explains.

Turning Support into Momentum

Bonolo is one of four Eduvos students awarded a bursary from United Stations, a media and broadcasting company. The bursary has not only helped her cover tuition fees but also provided new opportunities for growth, including a potential internship.

“It’s not just financial support. It allowed me to focus, to breathe, and to really invest in myself without the constant worry of how things would be paid for,” Bonolo says.

United Stations also hosts an annual day at their head office for bursary recipients and is offering a competitive 12-month internship programme for students studying media.

“They’ve opened a space where we can apply for the internship, and if selected, we’d work with them for a full year after graduating. It’s something I’m really hoping to be part of,” she says.

While Bonolo is also considering pursuing her honours, she sees the internship as a stepping stone that could offer her invaluable industry experience.

“United Stations is dedicated to shaping South Africa’s future by investing in its youth through our bursary sponsorships and the Youth Employment Service (YES) Programme, creating opportunities that truly transform lives,” says United Stations.

Advice for Future Vossies

Bonolo’s advice for other students applying for bursaries is simple: “Be honest with your goals and show that you’re serious about your growth. Bursary providers aren’t looking for perfect students, but they are looking for people who are committed and consistent. If you’re willing to put in the work, opportunities will find you.”

To United Stations, Bonolo shares her heartfelt thanks. “Thank you for believing in me. Your support has not only lifted the financial stress but has also empowered me as a person. I’ve had the space to grow, to focus, and to plan my next steps. The first half of the year was intense, but now I finally feel like I can breathe and just concentrate on finishing strong.”
