Eduvos Durban Celebrates Distinguished Guests from Humanities Fields.

Derosha Moodley, the talented Literature Lecturer at our Eduvos Durban Campus reflects on their recent Humanities event in this faculty feature.

On Friday 19th of May, the Eduvos Durban (Umhlanga) campus played host to three Humanities professionals from the disciplines of academic research, creative writing and psychology. Our three guests spoke to our students about career options in professional research, creative writing and in practicing psychology. Guests comprised award-winning South African writer, filmmaker, actor, former attorney and academic, Ashwin Singh (Who is also the syllabus text writer of the play To House studied in our English Literature 1B module), Senior English lecturer from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Spain, Dr. Felicity Hand, and Clinical Psychologist in private and public practice with over two decades of experience, Shantal Singh.

Dr. Hand shared her expertise as a postcolonial researcher with students. She spoke about how she amalgamated the same text that we study in English Literature 1 into her syllabus. It was a treat to witness a lecture about a local Durban text taught to Durbanite Vossies by a visiting scholar from Spain. Dr. Hand's unique perspectives of conventional Durban ideology, culture and social experiences gave insight on how our daily social experiences are received by another part of the world. It was a fascinating lecture attended by a student audience of mixed faculty representation.

That's not all!

Durban (Umhlanga) Vossies Daniel Singery, Keholin Naidoo, Bongumusa Mtshali, Taine Blake, Revone Manicum, Erika Govender, Keiana Murthi and Subhadra Singh presented opinion pieces on Ashwin Singh's text and performed dramatic readings of scenes from the play To House. It is not every day that students get the opportunity to interact with the writer, producer and scholar of one of their setworks, but at Eduvos, we made the dream come true! The guests were as impressed with our students as the audience that praised them.

After the lecture and presentations were over, a Q&A session allowed Vossies from all 12 campuses to pose questions about the play To House and to get information about the industries the guests hailed from. So many myths about the writing and psychology industries were dispelled by the knowledge, experience and expertise of the guests.

The Eduvos Durban (Umhlanga) campus is absolutely grateful to our distinguished guests for this fantastic event. We would like to thank everyone who attended online and in person. Special thanks to Derosha Moodley for organising the event, and working with students to make their learning come alive. Thank you also to Arno Meyer, Olika Saikoolal and Sundeep Mohanlal for on-campus support, and Michael Dorfling for coordinating the event at national faculty level.
